All feelings of wealth exist in the mental landscape inside of your brain. Master your feelings. Master your mind. And you will begin to master your life. Contentment is one of the most powerful forces that lives inside the mind. Your level of contentment will shape the relationship you have with life. If you are content, you will be happy. If you feel discontent, you will be unhappy and unfulfilled. So one simple trick to feel wealthier about your life, is simply to go on an adventure to learn how to be content with the life you have.
Pro insight: The grateful person never runs out of the feelings that make him feel wealthy. Whereas, the ungrateful person spends his entire life never getting to feel wealthy at all no matter how much money they have.
Contentment. It’s such a powerful ideological force in life. The internet dictionary I just glanced at defines being content as: “A state of Peaceful Happiness and Satisfaction.”
I am writing so much about the subject of contentment today, because I recently realized how powerful contentment ultimately is in the equation of becoming wealthy.
I truly believe ⸺ with every red blood-cell surging through my pounding heart ⸺ that wealth is NOT just defined by the dollar amounts in our bank account. Wealth is also determined by the clarity and profundity of the thoughts in our mind.
Yes, wealth can partly be measured by the money in a person’s bank account. But wealth is more than just money inside the pages of this blog. Your level of wealth is also determined by the amount of happiness and satisfaction — also known as contentment —that you feel toward your life.
Saving and investing money is how you get the keys to unlock the first stage of wealth. Becoming content, and pursuing you’re your purpose in life, is how you get the keys to unlock the second stage of wealth.
So if you want to be supremely wealthy, do more than just chase, collect, and count money. Pursue contentedness equally. Happiness and satisfaction will pay dividends far more powerful than stocks ever will.
After writing last week’s post, I started thinking deeply about the definition of contentment and how it relates to my journey to find wealth. After posting it, I received a comment from, Murphy on Money on twitter which really inspired my thoughts to travel deeper on this subject.
His comment read, “It blows my mind that you don’t do a monthly budget! You and your wife must be very content to be able to do that. I think contentment is where wealth accumulation can begin… And God plays big role in finding contentment. “
Bam! That comment cracked my brain open and made the sound of a baseball bat hitting a home run because it was so dead on. It made me realize that contentment truly is the key to open the doors of wealth inside any mind. When you are content with what you have in life, you don’t need a lot of money or stuff to fill your ambitions. When you already have everything you want and need, there is nothing left to do but enjoy the life you have created. That is what being supremely wealthy ultimately means.
There are millions of articles on the web about saving money; increasing your income; starting a side hustle; and gaining your financial leverage in life. But this blog is different. We like to focus more on the journey to create a more powerful mind here, because your mind is the most powerful tool you will ever have to create wealth.
Realize that money is important in your journey through life. Money does increase more opportunities to experience the deepest moments in life. But money isn’t everything. The way to become fabulously wealthy is to become fabulously content with your life. Become grateful for what you have, and you will naturally begin to feel wealthier.
So how can you start to do this? I wrote a list below that describes 5 ways to increase the levels of contentment in your life:
How to Be Content and Wealthy: Step #1: Dream Again.
The first step to being content, is to learn how to dream again. Dream about big goals. Envision big achievements that you can make in life. Be audacious and courageous enough to actually think you are capable of living a life that is extraordinary. Open your mind to seeing possibilities beyond your daily tasks, and actually believe those possibilities can be a reality for you.
Once you begin to see the dreams that god is inspiring in your soul, then begin to do something about them. Do more than just dream. See yourself as a warrior on a mission to achieve those dreams. Fiercely add action to your dreams. Create real glimpses in reality that your dreams can become your reality in life. That is when life can get really exciting and fun.
For example, I one day dream of having millions of views on this blog. I dream of helping thousands of people with the stories I write. That’s the vision that keeps me writing when I am tired, frustrated, and want to give up. But I DON’T give up because I BELIEVE my dream are possible. I can see the visions in my mind. I can taste that my dreams are real. And it’s these awesome dreams that keep me working so hard on the tasks that don’t seem glamorous all the time.
I’ve been adding actions to my dreams (writing these blog posts) for a year now, and I am starting to see glimpses that my dreams are becoming a reality. For example, I am starting to get emails and comments from people I have never met before, encouraging me like these below comments:
“Hello, I’m a new subscriber, but I just have to say – this was an incredible post and exactly what I needed on this Thursday. Thank YOU.”
“Wow. Just, wow. I’m floored by this blog. I struggle with different things that keep me away from God. Ironically it’s my job that pays extremely well that is my stumbling block. The stress causes me to react less than godly, so much that I feel God is ashamed of me. So I hide my face from him. Forgetting that it’s for wretched people like me who He came for. My upbringing as a tough guy in Brooklyn doesn’t help my instinct to hit first and ask questions later. Anyway, I love the concept of involving God in all financial decisions. I will be implementing it. Keep up the good work.”
I don’t have millions of viewers yet. But that’s Ok because I have these readers, and they are important to me. They are showing me that I am on the right track. To become content and wealthy, you don’t have to change the world all at once. Just do a little at a time. Let the little ⸺ done consistently ⸺ add up to a lot ⸺ and you’ll be amazed as you begin to change the world as you go through your unique life.
How to be Content and Wealthy: Step #2: Find out what you love. Do that.
Contentment and wealth grow from the seeds of happiness and satisfaction. The seeds of happiness and satisfaction begin to sprout when you’re doing what you love in life.
The best and simplest way to feel happy and satisfied in life, is to spend as much time as you can doing the things you love. Doing what you love will make you feel energized. It will make you feel like you are on an adventure to accomplish the purpose in life that you were created for. Doing what you love is the biggest step you can take to start feeling content and wealthy in your life.
After all, what does a million dollars mean if it’s in the hand of a person who is miserable in their life? And how much is a few dollars worth, if it is in the hand of a person who is happy, grateful, and at peace?
Now, I am not saying quit your job tomorrow so you can do what you love and pursue your greatest, deepest passions. That’s a big risk to take. Doing that may not be the best short-term decision to make to accomplish your long-term dreams. But I am saying, start spending as much of your free-time doing the things you simply love.
Then, as you get better at these passions, and more efficient with your time, just keep doing them more and more until you become a respected expert in your area. It may take years, but eventually you’ll find yourself doing the things you love all day, every day, and you will feel like the most wealthy, happy, and satisfied person on the planet, because you are the most content person doing the things you love the most every day.
How to Be Content and Wealthy: Step 3: Prioritize Your Mental Health.
Always, always, always, make your mental health as your first priority in life. Wealthy people care about the security and growth of their money. But content people care even more about the quality of their mental health. They value their money. But even more so, they value their ability to think, love, and make smart decisions that will lead them to their dreams in life.
Supremely wealthy people will never sacrifice the clarity of their minds, for another dollar in their pockets.
Wealthy and content people prioritize their mental health first because they know if they are happy and satisfied in life, they won’t need a lot of money to maintain their peaceful bliss. Wealthy people have a positive attitude towards their life. You can’t have a positive attitude with a sick mind. Wealthy and content people do everything they can to make sure their minds are healthy at all times.
“Your mind is the most powerful tool you have and you must make it believe that you make less than you do so that you will naturally spend less. Your mind believes that if you bring home a monthly paycheck of $3,000, then you have $3,000 to spend. And you’ll spend it, all of it. If you get a raise and start bringing home $4,000 a month, you’ll spend all of that, too, and wonder how on earth you managed on less. But if you start bringing home $3,500 a month, your mind will adjust to it, and you’ll naturally spend less. The way to do it is to just put it away before you ever see it. You won’t be depriving yourself. You’ll be paying yourself. You’ll be on your own payroll and soon be able to enjoy two of life’s great pleasures: counting your money as it grows and dreaming of how you’ll spend it when the time comes.”
Pursue an awesome, healthy mentality first, and you can awaken new power and possibilities in your mind.
How to Be Content and Wealthy: Step #4: Always Strive to Do The Right Thing.
Content people reach a state of happiness and peace, because they are always striving and achieving to do the right things with their life. They gain satisfaction from making the right decisions. Not just once or twice on a whim, but consistently, with every-day effort. They don’t just strive for money. They strive to make consistently great decisions, because it’s great decisions that will naturally lead them to wealth. Wealth is just the by-product of many great decisions made over and over again.
To make the right decisions in your life, you must go on a journey to discover what “your right thing is.” Find your “right decisions” by trying, helping, failing, and always standing back up and trying again. Save your money. Invest your time. Make a difference. Learn to become grateful, and become content. Make the right decisions in your life, and you will naturally find your path to wealth and contentment beyond your wildest dreams.
How to Be Content and Wealthy: Step #5: Reject Consumerism. Embrace Creationism.
Creators know that the journey to create their dreams is where contentment is found. Contentment is rarely found in the achievement. It is found in the journey. So they spend the majority of their life working to create their dreams, rather than consuming the dreams someone else offers them.
Creators don’t just accept the fate they were born into in life. They don’t just accept the feelings they are given every day when they wake up. If they don’t like their environment, they work to change it. They work to customize their reality to their liking. If they don’t like their feelings, they create new, healthier feelings.
If you want to be content and wealthy, don’t just accept life as it is. Evolve into a creator. Work to create your reality to your liking. Create the feelings inside of yourself that you want to live. Consuming leads to living other people’s dreams for yourself. Creating your dreams, leads contentment with your life, and you to living your dreams.
In conclusion, I think the equation of contentedness looks something like this: Contentedness = God inspired dreams + Your action to accomplish those dreams.
That, I believe, is the essence of contentedness right there. What do you think? What makes you feel more contentment? Do you think the ideological force of contentment is one of the most important ingredients to create wealth.
